Brown Flaxseeds (Brown Linseeds)

Brown flaxseeds, also called brown linseeds or alsi, are small, flat, glossy seeds with a mild, nutty taste. Home cooks use them in baking, porridge, smoothies and seed crackers. They can also be ground to make a simple egg replacement for baking.

What Brown Flaxseeds Taste and Feel Like

Brown flaxseeds have a gentle, slightly earthy flavour that sits quietly in the background. The whole seeds are hard and shiny with a light crunch. They taste nuttier once toasted.

Brown and golden flaxseeds are used in much the same way. Brown seeds tend to taste a little more earthy, and they show up as small dark flecks in bread and bakes.

Ways to Use Brown Flaxseeds

Brown flaxseeds work in both sweet and savoury cooking, and a small spoonful goes a long way. Here are some common ideas:

  • Stir ground flaxseed into porridge, overnight oats or yoghurt.
  • Add whole seeds to bread dough, rolls and seeded loaves.
  • Mix them into granola, flapjacks and homemade seed crackers.
  • Blend ground flaxseed into smoothies.
  • Dry-roast them for alsi ladoo or a dry chutney powder.

How to Toast and Grind Brown Flaxseeds

Toasting and grinding are the two simplest ways to get more from brown flaxseeds. Warm the seeds in a dry pan over a low heat for a minute or two. Stir until they smell nutty, then tip them out so they don't burn.

To grind them, use a spice grinder, coffee grinder or small blender. Grind a small amount at a time so it is ready to use. Ground flaxseed mixes more easily into batters, doughs and drinks than whole seeds.

For a flax egg, stir 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed into 3 tablespoons of water. Leave it for about 5 minutes until it turns thick and gloopy. It can replace one egg in many muffins, pancakes and simple cakes. It works less well in light, airy bakes.

Brown Flaxseeds FAQ

Are flaxseeds and linseeds the same thing?

Yes, they are the same seed. In the UK the name linseed is often used, and flaxseed is the more common name on recipes and packs.

Do I need to grind brown flaxseeds before using them?

No, but it depends on the dish. Whole seeds suit bread tops, loaves and crackers where you want a bit of crunch. Ground flaxseed is better for flax eggs, smoothies, porridge and batters.

What is the difference between brown and golden flaxseeds?

The two are very similar in taste and use. Brown flaxseeds have a slightly earthier flavour and a darker colour, so you can swap one for the other in most recipes.

Add brown flaxseeds to your basket for your next seeded loaf, batch of granola or homemade seed crackers.

Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. We may require further information or evidence to investigate the matter and, where necessary, may take up to 14 days to complete our investigation. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
