Rosecoco Beans

Rosecoco beans, sometimes written as rose coco beans, are dried beans with a pale pink skin and red speckles. They are best known in Kenyan cooking, where they are simmered for githeri and slow-cooked bean stews.

Rosecoco beans have a mild, earthy taste and a soft, creamy middle. They are medium-sized and look a lot like borlotti or cranberry beans. The speckles fade as the beans cook, leaving a soft pinkish-brown colour.

Ways to Use Rosecoco Beans

Rosecoco beans suit slow, gentle cooking in saucy dishes. They soak up the flavour of onion, tomato, garlic and spices well. Here are some common ways to cook them:

  • Githeri, the Kenyan dish of beans cooked with maize
  • Bean stew with tomato, onion and coriander, served with rice, ugali or chapati
  • Beans simmered in coconut milk with mild spices
  • Chilli-style bean pots and hearty soups
  • Cold bean salads once the beans are cooked and cooled

How to Cook Rosecoco Beans

Dried rosecoco beans should be soaked and boiled before they are eaten. Rinse them, then soak them in plenty of cold water for 8 to 12 hours or overnight.

Drain and rinse them again. Boil them hard for about 10 minutes, as you would with red kidney beans. Then lower the heat and simmer until tender. This usually takes around an hour, but the time varies with the age of the beans.

Add salt and acidic ingredients such as tomatoes near the end. This helps the beans soften evenly. Cooked beans keep their shape well enough for salads and stews, and they can be mashed lightly to thicken a sauce.

Rosecoco Beans FAQ

Do rosecoco beans need soaking?

Yes, soaking overnight is recommended. It shortens the cooking time and helps the beans cook evenly.

Are rosecoco beans the same as borlotti beans?

No, they are not the same, but they look and cook in a similar way. Both are speckled, pinkish beans that turn soft and creamy. You can often swap one for the other in stews and soups, though the taste may differ slightly.

Can I cook rosecoco beans in a pressure cooker?

Yes, a pressure cooker works well for dried beans and cuts the time a lot. Soak the beans first, boil them hard for 10 minutes, then follow your cooker's bean guidance.

Add rosecoco beans to your basket ready for your next pot of githeri or slow-cooked bean stew.

Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website.
