Firelighters

Firelighters, also called fire starters, are small burning aids that help you get a fire going quickly. People use them to light barbecues, wood burners, open fires, chimineas and fire pits. They mean you need far less paper and kindling to get started.

What Firelighters Are Used For

Firelighters give a steady flame that catches your fuel for you. The flame lasts long enough to light small sticks, logs or charcoal. This is why many people keep a few in the shed for the first barbecue of the year.

  • Lighting charcoal or briquettes on a barbecue
  • Starting logs in a wood burner or stove
  • Lighting an open fire or fire pit in the garden
  • Getting a chiminea going on a cool evening
  • Lighting a campfire when the kindling is a bit damp

How to Use Firelighters Safely

Firelighters work best when you set them at the base of your fuel before you light them. Stack your kindling or charcoal around them and leave gaps so air can move through. Then light the firelighter and let the fire build up.

For a barbecue, wait until the flames have died down and the charcoal is covered in grey ash. This is the time to start cooking. It stops food picking up any smell from the lighting stage.

Never add firelighters to a fire that is already burning. Do not use petrol or other liquids to speed things up. Always keep firelighters out of reach of children and follow the instructions on the pack.

Firelighters FAQ

Can I use firelighters on a barbecue?

Yes, firelighters are commonly used to light charcoal and briquettes on a barbecue. Let the coals turn grey and the flames settle before you cook.

Do I still need kindling with firelighters?

You need much less kindling, but a few small sticks help when you are lighting logs. Charcoal usually catches well with just the firelighter and a little airflow.

Can I use firelighters in a wood burner?

Many people do, but check the pack instructions and your stove maker's advice first. Place the firelighter under the kindling and close the door as directed for your stove.

Add firelighters to your basket so the next barbecue or log fire is easy to start.

We take great care when preparing and securely packing every order; however, during transportation, parcels may be handled by several parties, including the courier, and despite our best efforts, minor cosmetic damage such as dents, marks, scuffs or damage to external packaging may occasionally occur. Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. Where damage appears to have occurred during delivery, we may need to raise a claim with the courier, and you may be required to complete and return any Damage on Receipt (DOR) form or other documentation requested by the courier before the claim can be processed. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
