Spaghetti

Spaghetti is a long, thin, round dried pasta that is boiled and served with sauce. It is the usual choice for spaghetti bolognese, carbonara and simple tomato pasta on a weeknight.

Spaghetti suits cooks who want a pasta that twirls neatly on a fork and coats evenly in sauce. It keeps in the cupboard, so it is handy to have ready for quick dinners.

What Spaghetti Is Like to Cook and Eat

Cooked spaghetti is smooth, springy and mild in taste, which lets the sauce lead. The long strands pick up thin, silky sauces such as oil and garlic or cheese and pepper very well.

It works with chunkier sauces too, though shapes like penne hold big pieces better. If your sauce is mostly smooth, spaghetti is a natural fit.

Ways to Use Spaghetti

Spaghetti goes with many classic Italian-style dishes and plenty of everyday family meals.

  • Spaghetti bolognese with a slow-cooked meat or lentil ragù
  • Spaghetti carbonara with eggs, cheese and pepper
  • Aglio e olio with garlic, chilli and olive oil
  • Puttanesca with tomatoes, olives and capers
  • Spaghetti and meatballs in tomato sauce
  • Prawn, lemon and chilli spaghetti

How to Cook Spaghetti Well

Spaghetti cooks best in a large pan of well-salted, boiling water. Follow the cooking time on the pack and taste a strand a minute or two early.

Stir in the first minute so the strands do not stick together. Before draining, save a mugful of the cooking water. A splash stirred into the sauce makes it glossy and helps it cling to the pasta.

There is no need to add oil to the water. Oil can make the pasta slippery, so the sauce slides off.

Spaghetti FAQ

How much spaghetti should I cook per person?

Around 75g to 100g of dried spaghetti per adult is a common portion. Use the lower amount for a light meal and the higher one for a hungry appetite.

Should I break spaghetti before cooking?

No, it is better to leave spaghetti whole. Hold the strands in the pan and push them down gently as the ends soften into the water.

Can I rinse spaghetti after cooking?

No, rinsing washes away the starch that helps sauce stick. Only rinse it if you are making a cold pasta salad.

Add spaghetti to your basket ready for the next bolognese or carbonara.

We take great care when preparing and securely packing every order; however, during transportation, parcels may be handled by several parties, including the courier, and despite our best efforts, minor cosmetic damage such as dents, marks, scuffs or damage to external packaging may occasionally occur. Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
