Product Description
Whole Black Pepper (Black Peppercorns)
Whole black pepper, also called black peppercorns or kali mirch, is the dried berry of the pepper vine, sold as small, round, wrinkled dark seeds for grinding fresh or cooking whole.
Black peppercorns have a sharp, warm heat and a strong, woody smell. The aroma is much livelier when you crack the peppercorns just before using them.
Why Choose Whole Black Pepper Over Ground
Whole peppercorns keep their aroma until you crush them, so you control how fine or coarse the pepper is. Ground pepper is quicker, but it loses its smell faster once it has been milled.
You can grind the peppercorns in a pepper mill, crush them in a pestle and mortar, or blitz them in a spice grinder. A coarse crack gives bursts of heat, and a fine grind blends into the dish.
Ways to Use Black Peppercorns
Black peppercorns work in savoury cooking from many cuisines, both whole and ground. Here are some common ways to use them:
- Cracked over steak, or crushed for a creamy pepper sauce
- Fried whole in hot oil at the start of a curry or pilau
- Simmered in stocks, soups and braises for a gentle background heat
- Added to pickling jars and brines with mustard seeds and bay leaves
- Ground into homemade garam masala and other spice blends
- Freshly ground over eggs, pasta, salads and roast vegetables
Simple Tips for Cooking with Whole Black Pepper
Whole peppercorns give the best flavour when you add them at the right time. Put them in early for a mellow, rounded heat. Grind them over the dish at the end for a sharper, fresher bite.
For more depth, toast the peppercorns in a dry pan for a minute until they smell warm. Let them cool before you grind them. Remember that whole peppercorns are hard to chew, so pick them out of a finished dish or warn people they are there.
Whole Black Pepper FAQ
Can I grind whole black pepper without a pepper mill?
Yes, a pestle and mortar or a spice grinder works well. You can also crush the peppercorns under the flat of a heavy knife or with a rolling pin on a chopping board.
Is kali mirch the same as black pepper?
Yes, kali mirch is the Hindi name for black pepper. Whole kali mirch is used in rice dishes, curries and spice mixes.
Should I add whole peppercorns early or late in cooking?
Add them early if you want a softer, background warmth, for example in stock or a curry base. Add freshly ground pepper near the end if you want a sharper kick.
Add whole black pepper to your basket and keep a supply ready for your pepper mill, your next curry or a jar of pickles.

We take great care when preparing and securely packing every order; however, during transportation, parcels may be handled by several parties, including the courier, and despite our best efforts, minor cosmetic damage such as dents, marks, scuffs or damage to external packaging may occasionally occur. Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. We may require further information or evidence to investigate the matter and, where necessary, may take up to 14 days to complete our investigation. Where damage appears to have occurred during delivery, we may need to raise a claim with the courier, and you may be required to complete and return any Damage on Receipt (DOR) form or other documentation requested by the courier before the claim can be processed. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
