Celery Seeds

Celery seeds are tiny, brown whole seeds with a strong, savoury, slightly bitter taste, used to season pickles, coleslaw, soups and stews. A small pinch gives a dish the deep, earthy note of celery without adding any fresh stalks.

What Celery Seeds Taste Like

Celery seeds have a warm, grassy aroma and a taste that is stronger and more bitter than fresh celery. The seeds are very small, so they sit in a dish without being noticed. Their flavour is concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

Ways to Use Celery Seeds

Celery seeds work best in dishes that are savoury, tangy or creamy. Here are some common ways to use them:

  • In pickling brines for cucumbers, onions and cabbage
  • Stirred into coleslaw, potato salad and egg mayonnaise
  • In tomato soup, chicken soup and slow-cooked stews
  • In spice rubs and seasoning mixes for meat and fish
  • Baked into savoury bread, crackers and cheese scones
  • Added to a Bloody Mary or tomato juice

How to Cook with Celery Seeds

Celery seeds taste best when they are warmed or lightly crushed first. Toast them in a dry pan for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then crush them with a pestle and mortar or leave them whole.

Add the seeds early to soups and stews so the flavour has time to spread. For salads and dressings, crush them and stir them in a little ahead of serving. Start with a small pinch, taste, and add more if needed.

Celery seeds also make simple homemade celery salt. Grind them and mix with fine salt to your own taste. This lets you control how salty the blend is.

Celery Seeds FAQ

Are celery seeds the same as ajwain?

No, celery seeds and ajwain are different spices. Ajwain, also called carom seeds, tastes sharper and more like thyme. Celery seeds are milder and taste of celery.

Can I use celery seeds instead of fresh celery?

Celery seeds can add a similar savoury flavour, but they do not replace the crunch or bulk of fresh celery. Use a small pinch for flavour in soups, stocks and dressings.

Should I grind celery seeds?

You can use them whole or ground, depending on the dish. Whole seeds suit pickles and brines. Lightly crushed seeds blend better into dressings, rubs and bread dough.

Add celery seeds to your basket for your next batch of coleslaw, pickles or homemade soup.

Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website.
