Chakri (Chakli)

Chakri, also called chakli, is a crunchy, spiral-shaped Indian snack that is deep-fried until crisp. It is best known as a savoury tea-time nibble and a favourite at Diwali.

The snack is shaped in a tight coil, so each piece has lots of ridges. These give it a crisp, crumbly bite that snaps cleanly rather than chewing.

What Chakri Tastes and Feels Like

Chakri has a dry, crunchy texture and a savoury, toasty taste. Traditional chakri is made from a dough of rice flour and lentil or gram flour, usually with seasonings such as cumin, sesame or chilli. Recipes vary from home to home, so the flavour can differ from one maker to the next.

The spiral shape is the main thing that sets it apart from other fried snacks. It is much crisper and lighter in the hand than a thick namkeen mix.

Ways to Enjoy Chakri

Chakri is easy to serve because it needs no preparation. It works well as a snack on its own or as part of a larger spread.

  • With a hot cup of masala chai in the afternoon
  • On a Diwali snack platter next to chivda, sev and sweets
  • As a savoury nibble for guests, alongside chutney
  • Broken into pieces and sprinkled over a bowl of chaat for extra crunch
  • In a lunchbox or on a car journey as a dry snack

Chakri is crisp and dry, so serve it in a bowl rather than on a plate. Crumbs are part of the fun, and the broken bits are good over yoghurt-based chaat.

Chakri FAQ

Is chakri the same as murukku?

Chakri and murukku are closely related but not identical. Both are fried spiral snacks made from rice and lentil flours. Chakli is the name used mainly in Maharashtra and Gujarat, while murukku is the South Indian version, often with a slightly different dough.

What is chakri usually eaten with?

Chakri is usually eaten with tea or coffee. It also sits well beside other savoury snacks, such as chivda, and a spoonful of tangy chutney.

Is chakri eaten only at Diwali?

No, chakri is eaten all year round. It is a traditional part of Diwali snack tables, but many families enjoy it any time they want something crunchy with tea.

Add chakri to your basket for your next tea-time spread or festive snack table.

We take great care when preparing and securely packing every order; however, during transportation, parcels may be handled by several parties, including the courier, and despite our best efforts, minor cosmetic damage such as dents, marks, scuffs or damage to external packaging may occasionally occur. Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. We may require further information or evidence to investigate the matter and, where necessary, may take up to 14 days to complete our investigation. Where damage appears to have occurred during delivery, we may need to raise a claim with the courier, and you may be required to complete and return any Damage on Receipt (DOR) form or other documentation requested by the courier before the claim can be processed. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
