Penne Pasta

Penne pasta is a short, hollow, tube-shaped pasta with ends cut on a slant. It is best known for pasta bakes and for chunky tomato sauces such as arrabbiata.

This penne is an easy shape for family dinners. It cooks in one pan and goes with almost any sauce you already make.

Why Penne Works So Well With Sauce

Penne holds sauce inside the tube as well as on the outside. Thick sauces, small pieces of vegetable and grated cheese all catch in the hollow centre.

The pasta is firm and slightly chewy when cooked al dente. It keeps its shape in the oven, so it suits baked dishes better than thin, delicate pasta.

Ways to Use Penne

  • Penne arrabbiata with chilli, garlic and tomatoes
  • Baked penne with mozzarella and a tomato or ragù sauce
  • Creamy mushroom or chicken penne
  • Pesto penne with cherry tomatoes and olives
  • Cold pasta salad for lunchboxes and picnics
  • Roasted vegetable penne with olive oil and parmesan

How to Cook Penne

Penne needs a large pan of boiling, salted water and a stir in the first minute. Stirring stops the tubes from sticking together.

Most penne takes around 10 to 12 minutes, but follow the timing on the pack. For a pasta bake, take it out a minute or two early, because it keeps cooking in the oven. Save a small cup of the pasta water to loosen the sauce.

Penne Pasta FAQ

How much penne should I cook per person?

About 75 to 100g of dried penne is a common portion for one adult. Use the smaller amount for a side dish or a rich, creamy sauce.

Should I rinse penne after cooking?

No, drain it and add the sauce straight away. Rinsing washes off the starch that helps the sauce cling. Only rinse it in cold water if you are making a cold pasta salad.

Which sauces go best with penne?

Chunky tomato sauces, meat ragù, creamy sauces and pesto all work well. The hollow tubes hold thicker sauces better than smooth, thin ones.

Add penne to your basket for your next pasta bake or midweek tomato pasta.

We take great care when preparing and securely packing every order; however, during transportation, parcels may be handled by several parties, including the courier, and despite our best efforts, minor cosmetic damage such as dents, marks, scuffs or damage to external packaging may occasionally occur. Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. We may require further information or evidence to investigate the matter and, where necessary, may take up to 14 days to complete our investigation. Where damage appears to have occurred during delivery, we may need to raise a claim with the courier, and you may be required to complete and return any Damage on Receipt (DOR) form or other documentation requested by the courier before the claim can be processed. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
