Blue Food Colouring Gel

Blue food colouring gel is a thick, concentrated colour that you mix into icing, buttercream, cake batter and other bakes to turn them blue. It is a good choice for birthday cakes, cupcakes and biscuits where you want a clear, even blue.

Why Use a Colour Gel Instead of Liquid Colouring

Blue food colour gel is thicker and stronger than the thin liquid colourings sold in small bottles. Because it is concentrated, you need only a small amount to colour a whole bowl of icing. It also adds very little liquid, so buttercream and royal icing keep their texture.

This makes the gel easy to control. You can build up from a pale sky blue to a deeper shade by adding a little at a time.

Ways to Use Blue Food Colouring Gel

  • Buttercream for cupcakes and layer cakes
  • Royal icing for decorated biscuits
  • Fondant and sugarpaste for ocean, sea and sky cake designs
  • Cake batter for blue sponge or a colourful cake inside
  • Meringues, macarons and frosting for party bakes
  • Playdough, slime and other craft projects at home, as long as the colour is only used for food-safe crafts you supervise

How to Get the Blue You Want

Add blue food colour gel with a clean cocktail stick or the tip of a spoon, not straight from the pot. Dip, stir in fully, then check the colour before adding more. This stops you from adding too much, which is hard to fix once it is mixed in.

Butter is naturally pale yellow, so blue buttercream can turn slightly green. For a truer blue, beat the butter until it is very pale first, or use a white vegetable fat in part of the recipe. Colours in buttercream and icing often deepen a little as they stand, so it helps to mix a shade lighter than you want.

Blue also mixes well with other colours. Add yellow to make green, or red to make purple.

Blue Food Colouring Gel FAQ

Is gel colouring stronger than liquid colouring?

Yes, gel colouring is more concentrated than liquid colouring, so you use less of it. This also helps you get a deeper colour without thinning your mixture.

Can I make green or purple with blue gel?

Yes, you can mix blue gel with yellow to make green, or with red to make purple. Add each colour a little at a time until you reach the shade you want.

Will it stain my hands and worktops?

It can, as strong colours often do. Wear gloves if you want to keep your hands clean, and wipe up any spills straight away.

Add blue food colouring gel to the basket ready for your next birthday cake, cupcakes or decorated biscuits.

Disclaimer

We take great care when preparing and securely packing every order; however, during transportation, parcels may be handled by several parties, including the courier, and despite our best efforts, minor cosmetic damage such as dents, marks, scuffs or damage to external packaging may occasionally occur. Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. We may require further information or evidence to investigate the matter and, where necessary, may take up to 14 days to complete our investigation. Where damage appears to have occurred during delivery, we may need to raise a claim with the courier, and you may be required to complete and return any Damage on Receipt (DOR) form or other documentation requested by the courier before the claim can be processed. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
