Garam Masala Powder

Garam masala powder is a ground blend of warm spices used in Indian and wider South Asian cooking. It adds depth and aroma to curries, dal, rice dishes and roasted vegetables.

The name means "hot mixture", but the taste is warm and fragrant rather than fiery. It is a handy jar for anyone who cooks curries at home and wants one spice to finish the pot.

What Garam Masala Tastes Like

Garam masala has a warm, sweet-savoury taste with a gentle peppery edge. Blends differ from maker to maker. Common spices include cumin, coriander, black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves.

Because the spices are already ground, the powder mixes into a sauce or a marinade with no toasting or grinding. A little goes a long way, so start with half a teaspoon to one teaspoon for a pot serving four, then taste.

When to Add Garam Masala While Cooking

Garam masala is usually added near the end of cooking. Its aroma is delicate and fades with long simmering. Stir it in during the last few minutes, or sprinkle it over the dish just before serving.

Many cooks also add a small pinch at the start with the onions, then a second pinch at the end. This gives both a cooked-in depth and a fresh aroma on top.

Ways to Use Garam Masala Powder

  • Stir into chicken curry, lamb curry or paneer masala
  • Finish a pot of dal tadka or chana masala
  • Season the rice for biryani or vegetable pulao
  • Mix into yoghurt for a tandoori-style marinade
  • Add to keema, samosa fillings or spiced potatoes
  • Sprinkle over roasted cauliflower, sweet potato or chickpeas

Garam Masala or Curry Powder?

Garam masala and curry powder are two different spice blends. Curry powder usually contains turmeric, so it is yellow and is used to build a curry from the start. Garam masala is generally browner, has no turmeric as a main spice, and is used to add aroma and warmth. If a recipe asks for garam masala, curry powder is not a like-for-like swap.

Garam Masala Powder FAQ

Is garam masala hot?

No, garam masala is not usually hot like chilli powder. It tastes warm and peppery, but blends vary, so add a little first and taste.

Can I use garam masala instead of curry powder?

You can, but the result will taste different. Garam masala has no turmeric as a main spice, so add turmeric and chilli separately if you want a colour and heat closer to a curry powder.

Do I cook garam masala or add it at the end?

Both work, but adding it near the end keeps more of its aroma. A small pinch at the start also helps build a deeper base.

Add garam masala powder to your basket, ready for the next curry, dal or biryani.

Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website.
