Ground Black Pepper (Blackpepper Powder)

Ground black pepper, also sold as blackpepper powder or kali mirch powder, is dried black peppercorns milled into a fine powder. It is used to season savoury food in the pan and at the table, from scrambled eggs to curries.

What Black Pepper Powder Tastes Like

Black pepper powder has a sharp, warm heat and a woody, slightly citrusy smell. The heat is quick and bites at the front of the mouth, which is different from the slow burn of chilli.

Because the pepper is already ground, it mixes evenly into batters, marinades, sauces and spice blends. It also dissolves easily into soups and gravies, so there are no whole pieces to bite into.

Ways to Use Ground Black Pepper

Ground black pepper goes into both everyday meals and traditional recipes. Here are some common uses:

  • Scrambled eggs, omelettes and egg bhurji
  • Pepper sauce for steak, or creamy mushroom sauce
  • Rasam, pepper chicken and other South Indian dishes
  • Garam masala and homemade curry powder blends
  • Seasoned flour for fried chicken or fish
  • Soups, stews, mashed potato and roast vegetables

Ground Pepper or Whole Peppercorns?

Ground pepper is the quicker choice, while whole peppercorns keep their aroma for longer. Once pepper is milled, the smell fades faster, so ground pepper suits cooks who use it often and want no extra steps.

Whole peppercorns suit a grinder at the table or a pepper crust, where you want a coarse, crunchy texture. Ground pepper is better when you want the flavour to blend smoothly into the dish.

When to Add Black Pepper Powder

Black pepper powder gives a sharper bite when it goes in near the end of cooking. Stirred in early, it gives a softer, more rounded warmth through the whole dish.

For eggs, creamy sauces and soups, add a pinch just before serving. For curries and marinades, add it with the other spices. Start with a small amount, as pepper can build in heat as it sits.

Ground Black Pepper FAQ

Is black pepper powder the same as kali mirch powder?

Yes, kali mirch is the Hindi name for black pepper. Kali mirch powder is simply ground black pepper.

Can I use ground pepper instead of cracked peppercorns?

Yes, but use a little less. Ground pepper spreads through food more evenly and tastes stronger per pinch, while cracked pepper gives a coarser texture.

Should I add black pepper at the start or end of cooking?

Add it at the end for a sharp, fresh bite. Add it earlier for a milder, more blended flavour.

Add ground black pepper to your basket and keep it by the hob for eggs, sauces and your next curry.

Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website.
