Ground Cumin (Cumin Powder)

Ground cumin, also called cumin powder or jeera powder, is a fine, sandy-brown spice made from dried cumin seeds. It adds a warm, earthy flavour to curries, chilli and spice mixes.

The seeds are already ground, so the powder stirs straight into sauces, marinades and rubs. There is nothing to toast or crush first.

What Cumin Powder Tastes Like

Cumin powder has a warm, earthy, slightly nutty taste with a hint of bitterness. The smell is strong and savoury. Because it is fine, the flavour spreads evenly through a dish. This is why it is a base spice in many blends, including garam masala and taco seasoning.

Ways to Use Cumin Powder

Cumin powder works in everyday dishes from many cuisines. Here are some common ways to use it:

  • Dal, chana masala and aloo gobi
  • Keema and other spiced mince dishes
  • Chilli con carne and taco mince
  • Hummus and falafel mix
  • Raita and yoghurt dips, sprinkled on top
  • Dry rubs for chicken, lamb or roast vegetables
  • Lentil soup and bean stews
  • Roasted carrots or sweet potato wedges

Tips for Cooking with Cumin Powder

Cumin powder is best added early to hot oil with the onions. Stir it for 20 to 30 seconds so the flavour opens up. Ground spices burn fast and turn bitter, so add a splash of water or some chopped tomatoes if the pan looks dry.

For raita or a finishing sprinkle, warm the powder in a dry pan for about a minute until it smells fragrant. Let it cool, then stir it in. Start with a small amount, as cumin is strong and easy to overdo.

Ground Cumin or Whole Cumin Seeds?

Ground cumin suits dishes where you want an even, background flavour, while whole cumin seeds suit tempering. Whole seeds crackle in hot oil at the start of a curry or at the end of a dal. The powder blends into sauces, marinades and rubs, and it is quicker for a weeknight meal. Many cooks keep both.

Ground Cumin FAQ

Is cumin powder the same as jeera powder?

Yes, cumin powder and jeera powder are the same spice. Jeera is the Hindi name for cumin.

Can I use ground cumin instead of whole cumin seeds?

Yes, but use a little less powder than you would seeds, as it tastes stronger once ground. Add it with the other spices rather than to the oil on its own, so it does not burn.

When should I add cumin powder to a curry?

Add it after the onions have softened and stir it in for under a minute. You can also add a pinch near the end to lift the flavour.

Add ground cumin to your basket ready for the next pot of dal, chilli or spiced roast vegetables.
