Hex Keys

Hex keys, also called Allen keys, are small hand tools with a six-sided end that fits into hex socket screws and bolts. They are used to tighten or loosen fixings on flat-pack furniture, bikes and general home repairs.

This pack of hex keys suits anyone who wants the right tool to hand for small jobs around the house. It is a handy extra for the toolbox, the garage or the kitchen drawer.

What Hex Keys Are Used For

Hex keys are used wherever a screw has a six-sided hole in its head instead of a slot or cross. You turn the key by hand, so you can feel how tight the screw is getting.

  • Building wardrobes, shelves, beds and other flat-pack furniture
  • Adjusting saddles, handlebars and brakes on a bike
  • Tightening loose fittings on chairs, tables and cabinet hinges
  • Small repairs on garden furniture and household items

How to Choose the Right Hex Key Size

A hex key only works well when it matches the size of the socket in the screw. Hex keys come in many sizes, and each one fits only its own socket.

Push the key fully into the screw head before you turn it. It should sit snugly with no wobble. A key that is too small can slip and round off the socket, which makes the screw harder to undo later.

For stubborn screws, hold the key close to the bend for more control. Use the longer arm when you need extra turning force, and the shorter arm for tight spaces.

Hex Keys FAQ

Are hex keys and Allen keys the same thing?

Yes, hex keys and Allen keys are the same tool. Allen is a common name in the UK, and hex key describes the six-sided shape.

What should I do if a hex key feels loose in the screw?

Stop and try the next size up or down. A loose fit can damage the socket, so the key should slide in snugly before you turn it.

Can I use hex keys for flat-pack furniture?

Yes, flat-pack furniture is one of the most common uses. Many fittings in self-assembly furniture are tightened with a hex key.

Add these hex keys to your basket and keep them ready for the next bit of furniture to build or bike to adjust.

Disclaimer

We take great care when preparing and securely packing every order; however, during transportation, parcels may be handled by several parties, including the courier, and despite our best efforts, minor cosmetic damage such as dents, marks, scuffs or damage to external packaging may occasionally occur. Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. We may require further information or evidence to investigate the matter and, where necessary, may take up to 14 days to complete our investigation. Where damage appears to have occurred during delivery, we may need to raise a claim with the courier, and you may be required to complete and return any Damage on Receipt (DOR) form or other documentation requested by the courier before the claim can be processed. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
