Henna powder, also called mehndi powder, is a fine green-brown powder made from the dried, ground leaves of the Lawsonia plant. It is mixed with a liquid into a paste and used at home to colour hair with a warm red-orange tint.

What Henna Powder Gives You

Henna powder is a plant-based dye that stains the hair rather than lifting its colour. It adds a coppery red or orange tone to hair. On dark hair the change is subtle and shows mostly in sunlight. On grey or light hair the colour looks brighter and more orange.

The powder has a grassy, earthy smell. It mixes into a thick, soft paste that feels a bit like wet mud. Henna has long been part of hair care in South Asia and the Middle East.

How to Mix and Use Henna Powder

Henna paste needs time to release its colour before you use it. Most people mix it the evening before or a few hours ahead. These steps are a simple guide.

Stir the powder with warm water, or a mild acidic liquid such as lemon juice or cooled tea, until it forms a thick paste like yoghurt.
Cover the bowl and leave it to rest for several hours.
Wear gloves and apply the paste to clean, dry hair, section by section.
Cover the hair and leave the paste on for around one to three hours.
Rinse well with water until it runs clear.

Henna stains skin, clothes and worktops. Wear old clothes and wipe spills straight away.

Before You Colour Your Hair

Do a patch test before using henna powder on your hair for the first time. Put a small amount of paste on a patch of skin and check it after 24 hours. Do not use it if you see any redness or irritation. Keep it away from your eyes.

Henna on its own gives red and orange shades. Some people mix it with indigo powder, which is a separate product, to get browner tones. Test a small strand first to check the shade.

Yes, henna colours grey hair, but it usually turns orange or copper rather than natural brown. A strand test shows you the shade before you colour all your hair.

How long should I leave henna on my hair?

Most people leave henna paste on for about one to three hours. A longer time usually gives a deeper colour. Always rinse until the water runs clear.

Does the paste need to rest before use?

Yes, resting the paste for a few hours helps the dye release, so the colour is stronger. Keep the bowl covered while it rests.
