Whole Nutmeg

Whole nutmeg, also known as jaiphal, is the hard, oval seed of the nutmeg tree, grated fresh into sweet and savoury dishes. Whole nutmeg gives a warm, sweet and slightly woody flavour that is stronger and fresher than the ground spice from a jar.

Each nutmeg is brown, firm and about the size of a small olive. You grate off only what you need and keep the rest whole.

Why Choose Whole Nutmeg Over Ground

Whole nutmeg keeps its aroma longer than ground nutmeg because the oils stay locked inside the seed until you grate it. The scent is noticeably stronger the moment you grate it. That is why many cooks prefer to buy it whole for creamy sauces, custards and bakes.

It also gives you control. A light grating adds a gentle background warmth. A heavier grating gives a more spiced taste.

Ways to Use Whole Nutmeg

Whole nutmeg works in both sweet and savoury cooking, and a little goes a long way. Here are some common uses:

  • Béchamel and cheese sauce for lasagne, cauliflower cheese or macaroni cheese
  • Creamy mashed potato
  • Spinach and ricotta fillings for pasta
  • Rice pudding, custard tart and baked egg custard
  • Spiced cakes, pumpkin pie and apple crumble
  • Mulled wine, eggnog and warm milk drinks
  • Garam masala, biryani and rich curry sauces

How to Grate Nutmeg

The easiest way to grate whole nutmeg is with a fine grater or a microplane. Hold the nutmeg firmly and grate it straight over the pan or bowl. Add it near the end of cooking in sauces, so the aroma stays bright.

Start with a small pinch, taste, then add more if you need it. Nutmeg has a strong flavour and can easily overpower a dish.

Whole Nutmeg FAQ

How much ground nutmeg does one whole nutmeg make?

One whole nutmeg makes around 2 to 3 teaspoons of freshly grated nutmeg. The exact amount depends on the size of the nutmeg and how finely you grate it.

Do I need a special nutmeg grater?

No, a fine kitchen grater or microplane works well. A small dedicated nutmeg grater is handy if you grate it often, but it is not essential.

Can I use whole nutmeg instead of ground in a recipe?

Yes, simply grate the nutmeg and measure it as you would the ground spice. Use a little less at first, because freshly grated nutmeg tastes stronger.

Add whole nutmeg to your basket for your next white sauce, rice pudding or spiced bake.

We take great care when preparing and securely packing every order; however, during transportation, parcels may be handled by several parties, including the courier, and despite our best efforts, minor cosmetic damage such as dents, marks, scuffs or damage to external packaging may occasionally occur. Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. We may require further information or evidence to investigate the matter and, where necessary, may take up to 14 days to complete our investigation. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
