Jerk Seasoning

Jerk seasoning is a Jamaican-style spice blend used to give chicken, pork, fish and vegetables a hot, smoky, aromatic flavour. It is best known as the rub for jerk chicken, grilled until the outside is dark and sticky with spice.

What Jerk Seasoning Tastes Like

Jerk seasoning has a warm, peppery taste with a kick of chilli heat. Jerk blends usually lean on allspice, which Jamaicans call pimento, along with thyme and garlic. Together they give a sweet-spicy, herby smell as the meat cooks.

The heat differs from blend to blend. Start with a small amount, taste, and add more next time if you want it hotter.

Ways to Use Jerk Seasoning

Jerk seasoning works best as a rub or marinade on food that cooks over a fierce heat. These are the most common ways to use it:

  • Jerk chicken thighs or drumsticks, grilled, barbecued or baked in the oven
  • Jerk pork, ribs or belly slices
  • Jerk fish, such as salmon or white fish fillets
  • Roasted sweet potato, cauliflower or corn on the cob
  • Jerk rice and peas, or stirred into a pot of beans
  • A spoonful in burgers, wraps and sausage mix

How to Make a Jerk Marinade

The easiest jerk marinade is the seasoning mixed with a little oil and a squeeze of lime juice. Rub it into the meat, making sure it gets into any cuts or under the skin.

Leave chicken to marinate for a few hours, or overnight in the fridge, for a deeper flavour. Cook it until it is fully done, with a little char on the edges.

Jerk Seasoning FAQ

What is jerk seasoning made of?

Jerk seasoning is usually made from allspice, chilli, thyme, garlic and other spices. The exact mix depends on the blend, so check the ingredients list on this page.

Is jerk seasoning very hot?

Jerk seasoning is usually spicy, but the heat level varies between blends. Begin with a small amount and build up to suit your taste.

How long should I marinate chicken in jerk seasoning?

A few hours is enough to give chicken a good jerk flavour. Leaving it overnight in the fridge gives a stronger taste.

Add jerk seasoning to your basket, ready for the next barbecue or tray of oven-baked chicken.

The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect.
