Product Description
Spanish Saffron (Kesar)
Spanish saffron is a spice made from the dried red threads of the saffron crocus flower. It is best known for giving paella its golden colour and warm, floral taste. The spice is also called kesar in Indian cooking.
Each crocus flower has only three red threads. That is why saffron is used by the pinch rather than the spoonful. A small amount goes a long way.
What Saffron Tastes and Looks Like
Saffron has a soft, honey-like and slightly earthy flavour with a floral smell. The dry threads are deep red. Once they steep in warm liquid, they turn it a bright golden-orange.
The taste is gentle and the colour is strong. Saffron adds warmth to a dish without making it hot or sharp.
Ways to Use Saffron in Cooking
Saffron is used in rice dishes, milk puddings and breads across Spain, Italy, Iran and India. These are some of the most common ways to use it:
- Paella and other Spanish rice dishes
- Risotto alla Milanese
- Saffron rice and chicken or vegetable biryani
- Persian rice with a golden tahdig crust
- Kheer, rice pudding and custard
- Saffron buns and sweet breads
- Fish stews and seafood soups
How to Prepare Saffron Threads
Saffron threads give the most colour and flavour when they are steeped first. Crush a small pinch gently between your fingers or with a pinch of sugar or salt. Then leave the threads in a few spoonfuls of warm water, stock or milk for 15 to 30 minutes.
Add the golden liquid and the threads to your dish. Do not put the dry threads straight into hot oil, because they will not release their colour as well.
Spanish Saffron FAQ
How much saffron should I use?
A small pinch is usually enough, roughly 10 to 20 threads for a dish that serves four. Start with less. You can always add more, but you cannot take it out.
Do I need to soak saffron before cooking?
Yes, steeping saffron in warm water, stock or milk helps it release its colour and aroma. Leave it for at least 15 minutes before adding it to your dish.
Is saffron the same as turmeric?
No, they are two different spices. Saffron is made from crocus threads and tastes floral and honeyed. Turmeric is a ground root with an earthy flavour. Turmeric is sometimes used for colour, but it does not taste like saffron.
Add Spanish saffron to your basket ready for your next paella or pot of golden saffron rice.

Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. We may require further information or evidence to investigate the matter and, where necessary, may take up to 14 days to complete our investigation. Where damage appears to have occurred during delivery, we may need to raise a claim with the courier, and you may be required to complete and return any Damage on Receipt (DOR) form or other documentation requested by the courier before the claim can be processed. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
