Sandalwood powder, also called chandan powder, is a fine, light brown powder made from ground sandalwood. It is used in India for puja, for making tilak and for homemade face packs. The scent is soft, sweet and woody.
What Chandan Powder Smells and Feels Like
Chandan powder is dry, silky and very fine, so it mixes smoothly into liquids. The aroma is gentle and warm rather than sharp. It is much milder than sandalwood oil or incense.
In Ayurvedic tradition, sandalwood is described as a cooling herb. That is one reason it is so often paired with rose water.
Ways to Use Sandalwood Powder
Sandalwood powder is mainly used for ritual and home beauty preparations. These are some of the most common uses:
- Chandan paste for tilak during puja and festivals
- Homemade face packs mixed with rose water or milk
- Simple paste blends with turmeric or multani mitti
- Scenting homemade incense, potpourri and sachets
How to Make Chandan Paste
To make chandan paste, mix the powder with a few drops of water or rose water until smooth. Add the liquid slowly. A thick paste holds its shape for tilak, and a looser one spreads more easily as a face pack.
If you plan to use it on your skin, patch test a small area first. Stop using it if your skin becomes irritated. Always follow any guidance printed on the pack.
Powder or Chandan Stick?
Sandalwood powder saves time compared with a chandan stick. A stick has to be rubbed on a wet stone to make paste. The powder is ready to mix straight away, and you can make just the amount you need.

Is sandalwood powder the same as sandalwood oil?
No, they are different products. The powder is ground wood and has a soft scent. The oil is a concentrated liquid with a much stronger aroma.
What do you mix with chandan powder to make a paste?
Rose water is the most common choice, and plain water also works. Some people use milk or yoghurt for face packs. Add a little at a time until you reach the thickness you want.
Can I use chandan powder in food?
