Shan Chaat Masala

Shan chaat masala is a tangy, salty and gently spicy spice blend in powder form. It is sprinkled over chaat, fruit, salads and snacks to give them a sour, savoury kick.

A small pinch is usually enough. It turns plain boiled potatoes, chickpeas or sliced fruit into something that tastes like street food.

What Chaat Masala Tastes Like

Chaat masala has a sharp, sour taste with plenty of salt and a little heat behind it. The tang is the main flavour, and the heat is mild next to it.

Blends differ from one maker to the next, so check the ingredients list on this page for the exact mix in this pack.

Ways to Use Chaat Masala

Shan chaat masala works best as a finishing spice, sprinkled on just before serving. Here are some common ways to use it:

  • Aloo chaat with boiled potatoes, onion and chutney
  • Chana chaat with chickpeas, tomato and chopped coriander
  • Papdi chaat, bhel puri and sev puri
  • Fruit chaat with apple, guava, pear, orange or cucumber
  • Hot chips, roast potato wedges and sweet potato fries
  • Popcorn and grilled sweetcorn
  • Raita, lassi and buttermilk (chaas)
  • Fried fish, paneer or grilled chicken, added after cooking

Tips for Using Chaat Masala

Chaat masala is best added at the end, because long cooking dulls its sour taste. Start with half a teaspoon, then taste and add more.

The blend is salty, so hold back on any extra salt in the dish. Add it after the salt, not before, and you will find it easier to get the balance right.

Chaat Masala vs Garam Masala

Chaat masala and garam masala are two different blends used in different ways. Chaat masala is sour, salty and tangy and goes on at the end. Garam masala is warm and aromatic and is usually cooked into curries and rice dishes. One does not replace the other.

Shan Chaat Masala FAQ

Is chaat masala spicy?

Chaat masala is usually mildly spicy, with the sour and salty taste coming through more than the heat. The exact heat depends on the blend.

When should I add chaat masala?

Add chaat masala at the end, just before serving. This keeps the tangy flavour sharp, and it works well on both hot and cold dishes.

Can I use chaat masala in cooking?

Yes, but it works best as a topping rather than a cooking spice. You can stir a little into marinades, but sprinkle more on after cooking for a stronger taste.

Add Shan chaat masala to your basket, ready for your next fruit chaat or plate of aloo chaat.

Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website.
