Shikakai Powder

Shikakai powder, also called soap pod powder, is a fine, light brown-green powder made from ground shikakai pods and traditionally mixed with water to wash hair. It has been used in Indian hair care for generations, often as a plain alternative to shop-bought shampoo.

What Shikakai Powder Is Like to Use

Shikakai powder is dry, light and slightly earthy in smell. When you stir it into warm water, it forms a soft, smooth paste that spreads easily through damp hair.

It lathers only a little. Hair can feel different at first if you are used to a foaming shampoo. Many people find the washing routine simple once they get used to the paste.

How to Use Shikakai Powder as a Hair Wash

The usual way to use shikakai powder is as a paste worked into wet hair and scalp, then rinsed out well with water.

  • Spoon some powder into a bowl and stir in warm water until it is like a thin paste.
  • Leave it for a few minutes so the powder softens.
  • Massage it into damp hair and scalp, then rinse until the water runs clear.

Some people mix shikakai powder with reetha (soapnut) powder or amla powder, as they do in traditional hair washes. Mix only as much as you need each time, as the paste is best used fresh.

Tips Before You Start

Shikakai powder is a plant powder, so do a small patch test on your skin before the first full use. Keep the paste away from your eyes and rinse well if any gets in.

Hair washed with shikakai can feel a little dry or rough straight after rinsing. Some people follow with a light oil or their usual conditioner. A small amount of powder goes a long way, so start with less and add more if needed.

Shikakai Powder FAQ

How do you use shikakai powder on hair?

Mix the powder with warm water into a smooth paste, apply it to wet hair and scalp, then rinse thoroughly. Start with about one or two tablespoons for shoulder-length hair and adjust from there.

Does shikakai powder lather like shampoo?

No, shikakai powder produces only a light, soft lather. It cleans in a different way from shop-bought shampoos, which are made to foam a lot.

Can I mix shikakai powder with other powders?

Yes, shikakai is often mixed with reetha or amla powder in traditional hair washes. Mix them into the same paste with warm water just before you use it.

Add shikakai powder to your basket to try a simple, traditional hair wash at home.

Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. We may require further information or evidence to investigate the matter and, where necessary, may take up to 14 days to complete our investigation. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
