Split Cashews

Split cashews, also called cashew halves, are cashew kernels that have separated into two halves along their natural seam. They are used mostly for cooking, blending and baking, where the nut does not need to stay whole.

Split cashews are pale cream, soft and buttery, with a mild, slightly sweet taste. They suit kormas, creamy sauces and home-made cashew cream. They also work well in stir-fries and sweets.

Ways to Use Split Cashews

Split cashews work best in dishes where the nuts are cooked, chopped or ground. Here are some common ideas:

  • Blend them into a smooth paste to thicken korma, shahi paneer or a creamy curry sauce.
  • Fry them in a little ghee or oil and scatter over biryani or pulao.
  • Stir them into a chicken or vegetable stir-fry near the end of cooking.
  • Grind them for Indian sweets such as kaju katli, or for cashew butter.
  • Chop them into granola, flapjacks, cookies and trail mix.
  • Blend them with water to make home-made cashew milk or cashew cream.

Split Cashews or Whole Cashews?

The main difference between split and whole cashews is shape, not taste. Whole cashews look neater as a snack or a garnish. Split cashews are the practical choice when the nuts will be blended, chopped or cooked into a sauce, because the finished dish looks the same.

Cashew halves are also easy to chop further. That makes them handy for baking and for sprinkling over rice dishes.

Preparing Split Cashews

Soaking split cashews in hot water for 15 to 30 minutes softens them for blending. This helps them turn into a smooth cream or paste. Drain them before you blend.

You do not need to soak them for snacking, baking or stir-fries. For a deeper, toasty colour, you can warm them briefly in a dry pan over a low heat. Watch them closely, as cashews brown quickly.

Split Cashews FAQ

Do split cashews taste different from whole cashews?

No, split cashews taste the same as whole cashews. They are simply cashews that have come apart into two halves.

Do I need to soak split cashews?

Only if you want to blend them into a very smooth cream, paste or milk. For snacking, baking or frying, you can use them as they are.

What is kaju?

Kaju is the Hindi word for cashew. Recipes for korma, kaju katli and other South Asian dishes often use this name.

Add split cashews to your basket for your next creamy curry, batch of granola or homemade cashew cream.

Minor cosmetic damage that does not affect the product’s safety, quality or intended use will not normally be considered a product defect. This is particularly applicable to products supplied in cans, tins, plastic containers, boxes or similar packaging. If you receive a product that is broken, leaking, materially damaged, unsafe, unusable or otherwise not as described, please contact us within 24 Hours of delivery by email or telephone and provide your order number, details of the issue and clear photographs of the damaged product and packaging. We may require further information or evidence to investigate the matter and, where necessary, may take up to 14 days to complete our investigation. Some products we sell are price-marked or display a manufacturer’s recommended or printed retail price. Please note that our online selling prices may differ from the price printed on the product because online orders involve additional costs such as picking, packing, packaging materials, warehouse handling, payment processing, website administration and delivery-related costs. You may therefore receive a product displaying a printed or recommended retail price that is lower than the price you paid online. The price you agree to pay is the online selling price displayed on our website at the time you place your order, and the presence of a lower printed or recommended retail price on the packaging does not, by itself, mean that the online purchase price was incorrect. Product images displayed on our website are for illustration and presentation purposes only. Actual product packaging, branding, design, colour, size, shape or appearance may vary depending on availability, manufacturer, batch or packaging updates. Such variations do not necessarily indicate that the product supplied is different from the product ordered, provided that the product itself corresponds to the description and specifications stated on the website. We ask customers to check their order and products as soon as reasonably possible after delivery and contact us promptly if there is any material damage, fault, incorrect item or issue with the goods.
